Some basic strategies and how to Win at BlackJack

Earlier we went over some of the basic rules of BlackJack, what we did not mention was some of the mechanics of the game such as the Stand, Hit, Double-Down and splitting pairs options. Don’t panic, we are going to go over each of the meanings and how to best utilise these game mechanics to increase your chances at beating the dealer at their own table.

Stand

Standing in BlackJack doesn’t mean forfeiting the round as many believe. Instead standing simply states that you would like to keep the cards dealt to you and you do not wish for another card in your hand.

There are two good points in time when you should stand. When you believe the total in your hand is higher than that of the dealer or when you believe the dealer will bust.

Keep in mind the dealer will have to hit when they have 16 points. Once they hit 17 or higher they will need to stand.

Hit

To “hit” is to ask the dealer to draw additional cards. Keep in mind that when asking for a dealer to hit if your total exceeds the total of 21 you’ve bust and lost.

You should only hit when you feel your total is not close enough to 21. Another great opportunity to hit is when the dealer’s revealed card has a value of 10. If you are running a total of 16 you risk the dealer’s unrevealed card to be another 10.

Hitting on a soft 17. A soft 17 is when you have an Ace(1 or 11) and a 6, meaning you can have a total of either 7 or 17. Hitting, in this case, is a great choice as your chances of going bust are slimmer since you can always use the ace as a value of 1 if you risk going over the 21.

Double Down

Doubling down is essentially a “Hit”. You can only Double Down as soon as you are dealt the cards after a split(we will get into splitting soon) .

Doubling down will double your initial bet and should primarily be used when your total value of cards is either 10-11.

A good strategy to double down is either when you have a value of 11, 10 or 9 and the dealer shows anything from (11) 2-10 (10)2-9 or (9) anything less than 7.

Splitting

You may only split when the cards dealt to you are a pair (example 2 Aces). Splitting will split your hand into two hands meaning the cards dealt will be split in two hands, this will increase your initial bet by 2. Your bet can be tripled or quadrupled according to how many times you split.
