Xiaomi Redmi Note 5: Phone Review

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is the successor to the popular Redmi Note 4 model, which excelled in terms of price/performance ratio and also a large battery. When looking for a phone at the level of 200 euros, he has always been one of the top favorites and his successor adheres to this concept as well.

Redmi Note 5 offers a 6-inch display with a resolution of 1080 × 2160 pixels. It is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor with 8 cores and a maximum frequency of 1.8 GHz. The phone is available in the global version in the version with 3 GB RAM / 32 GB storage for the price of 209 euros or in the version with 4 GB RAM / 64 GB for 239 euros. It pays to pay extra for a more equipped version, but you will also be satisfied with the cheaper model, which we also tested.

It’s hard to complain about the equipment of the phone, especially if we are talking about the cheaper version and the category of 200-euro phones. The price/performance ratio is excellent and, given the price, we also praise the nice and clear display with excellent viewing angles and good color display. The Redmi Note 5 delights with a thin thickness of only 8.1 mm and a 4000 mAh battery for long life on a single charge. Depending on your use, you will also achieve a 2-day endurance.

The design of the back does not burn, the back is made of aluminum and includes a fingerprint sensor and a dual camera, the shape of which was inspired by the iPhone X. Redmi Note 5 also offers a micro USB connector, 3.5 mm jack and a hybrid Dual SIM slot. Support for Quick Charge 3.0 will be pleased, despite the micro USB connector used.

The global version of the phone is equipped with a dual-camera that combines a 12 Mpx primary sensor and a 5 Mpx secondary camera for depth measurement. Compared to the Chinese version, the camera is of better quality – it has better sensors and an f / 1.9 aperture. It also uses artificial intelligence to create better photos during the day and in poor light. You can manually select a scene or leave the setting to artificial intelligence. Regardless of AI, we were very satisfied with the quality of the photos, not only in terms of price. Redmi Note 5 was also able to be a balanced opponent for the more expensive Galaxy A6 + 2018.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is an almost perfect phone in terms of price. We will forgive the micro USB port, but we would appreciate an NFC chip. Today, twice as much, as payment via Google Pay already works in Slovakia. The absence of this chip is also the only significant negative. On the other hand, we were pleased with Bluetooth version 5.0 and Wi-Fi with support for a / b / g / n / ac standards.

Like other Xiaomi phones, the Redmi Note 5 uses the MIUI extension. The piece we tested offered Android 8.1 and MIUI 9.5. The superstructure will please with rich settings and extra functions. An interesting feature is the ability to activate gesture control, where moving from below works as a return to the home screen. Slowly moving from below displays the last running applications, and moving backward is done by moving to the right at the left edge of the screen. You will also be pleased to see the volume of the data package and the transferred data in the quick settings bar – you must first set this data manually. And just as interesting is the display of the remaining battery in the form of a line below the top of the screen.
